My story

This trek is something that is close to my heart both as a passionate employee of Indigenous Community Volunteers (ICV), whose vital projects are being supported by this fundraiser and as an Aboriginal woman myself.

I decided to join the Larapinta Trek- a 232km trek in the heart of Central Australia, because I see ICV’s work in action truly making a difference to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Being a part of this trek is my endeavour to bring about more awareness of Indigenous issues in Australia and support development projects through ICV.

It is the show of my commitment to empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander to take control of their own futures, and support them in their own dreams and ambitions.

Why I am trekking for change

There is so much focus on international development that Australia often gets forgotten. I am a strong believer that everyone should share the same rights, access to opportunities and a healthy life.

When you hear that only 70% of today’s Indigenous children will reach their 65th Birthday it may come as a shock. Or that Central Australia has the highest rates of Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) in the world.

RHD is a disease of disadvantage causing early death that prevalent in developing countries. Indigenous children aged 5-14 years in Central Australia account for over 50% of new cases.

These are the reasons why I believe that focusing here, in our own country, in our own backyard, is just so important.

Please help make a difference

The communities and supporters through ICV are making a big difference to the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

You can help make a difference too.

I welcome any contribution, great or small that can help ICV continue their vital work in communities.

Thank you so much to my friends, colleagues and family who have been so generous in their support.  Anyone wishing to contact me can email fionapowell@live.com.au  or call me on 0407 586 233.

COMMUNITY FIRST DEVELOPMENT LIMITED

Community First Development is a registered charity and non-profit organisation working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to improve quality of life, wellbeing and social inclusion. Our vision is for an Australia where all Australians live in harmony and where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people share the same rights, respect and access to opportunities and rewards, and where their culture is valued and recognised as an asset to Australian society. Community First Development is invited by communities to help them overcome disadvantage. Our role is to support communities with skills and resources not normally available to them. We do this with the enthusiasm and dedication of volunteers from all walks of life, from child care to construction, medicine to manufacturing, and gardening to grant-writing.
